Antonis Klapsis about Ioannis Kapodistrias on “Our Global Voice” | 29 Sept. 2025

Antonis Klapsis, Associate Professor of Modern History and International Politics at the University of the Peloponnese, spoke about the work of the founder of the Greek state and its first governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, on the occasion of the anniversary of his death on 27 September 1831, on Voice of Greece radio and the program “Our Global Voice” with Dimitris Kontogiannis.

Mr. Klapsis referred to largely unknown aspects of Kapodistrias’ work. He inherited a chaotic situation and sought to bring order in areas such as education, the economy, justice, the fight against piracy, and more. At the same time, the governor struggled for the recognition of Greece as an independent state by the Great Powers of the era—something neither easy nor taken for granted. According to Mr. Klapsis, Kapodistrias was popular among the people but despised by the local notables of the time, which ultimately led to his assassination.
