Seafarer and traditional boatbuilder Nikolas Vlavianos is the featured guest on this episode of “Saturday Shift” – the special, two-hour weekend edition of the program “Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis.
“From a very young age, the sea drew me in as a living presence that speaks to you and enchants you. But you must learn how to listen to it. I never saw caiques and boats as mere traditional objects, but as vessels of memory, knowledge, and craft – as tools of life and as part of our culture,” says Nikolas Vlavianos, speaking with warmth and love for the sea and its vessels.
The guest also presents his outstanding book «Θαλασσινά Καΐκια και Βάρκες του τόπου μας, 18ος–20ος αιώνας» (“Seafaring Caiques and Boats of Our Land, 18th–20th Century”) by Arteon publications – a remarkable journey into the world of wooden hulls, seafaring, and cultural heritage, enriched by the wealth of material he has gathered on the wooden vessels that have sailed the Greek seas over the past centuries.
