On Mount Hymettus, just a few kilometers from the center of Athens, there is a story that most of us do not know.
Over the past few years, around 100 horses have been found wandering along the edges of the mountain—animals that were not born wild, but were abandoned and left to reproduce without care.
In this episode of “Moving Worlds” on Voice of Greece, Katerina Batzaki spoke by phone with Maria Marolia, founder of the initiative Help Horses Ymittos, who talked about the daily struggle to rescue, feed, and care for the horses of Hymettus, as well as the gaps in legislation that leave them without protection as stray animals.
A discussion about responsibility, awareness, and the power of citizens to protect animals that have no voice.
Because a horse left “free” within the urban landscape is not necessarily free—it may be at risk of starvation, improper feeding, or lack of water.
