“Moving Worlds”: Lake Kerkini, where nature takes center stage | 27 July 2026

On Monday, July 27, 2026, “Moving Worlds”, hosted by Katerina Batzaki on ERT’s Voice of Greece, took listeners to Lake Kerkini, one of Europe’s most important wetlands and a unique destination where people and nature coexist in a delicate balance.

In the first part of the program, Giannis Reklos, a physical education teacher, environmental programs coordinator, and founder of the traditional guesthouse Oikoperiigitis, spoke about the uniqueness of Lake Kerkini, its ecotourism identity, its remarkable birdlife, and the challenges facing the ecosystem due to human activity and water management.

In the second part, Manolia Vougioukalou, Wetlands Programme Coordinator at the Hellenic Ornithological Society, highlighted the lake’s international ecological significance. She explained the vital role of birds as indicators of environmental health, discussed the effects of climate change, and emphasized the importance of protecting Greece’s invaluable wetlands.

Through personal stories, scientific insight, and firsthand experience, the program presented Lake Kerkini as a place that reminds us that living in harmony with nature is essential for the future of us all.
