Moving Worlds: From Pasalimani to Elefsina | 15 June 2026

Voice of Greece’s “Moving Worlds,” hosted by Katerina Batzaki, embarked on a fascinating journey through the geography, history, and collective memory of the western Saronic Gulf.

The program welcomed Dr. Iordanis Papadopoulos, educator and explorer, who presented the maritime route From Pasalimani to Elefsina: Sailing through the Memory of the Western Saronic Gulf. Through an engaging narrative, he explored the enduring relationship between Athens, Piraeus, and the sea, highlighting the strategic importance of the Salamis Strait, the refugee and working-class heritage of Drapetsona and Keratsini, and the industrial legacy of Perama, Skaramangas, and Aspropyrgos.

Historian Dr. Evangelia Bafouni then discussed Elefsina as a place of initiation, culture, and continual transformation. She reflected on the significance of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the enduring symbolism of the myth of Demeter and Persephone, the coexistence of archaeological heritage and industrial landscape, and the cultural legacy left by Elefsina’s designation as the European Capital of Culture 2023.

The episode presented the western Saronic Gulf as an open book of history, where antiquity, maritime tradition, the refugee experience, industrial development, and contemporary culture continue to coexist and shape one another.
