The September 21 episode of “Moving Worlds,” presented by Katerina Batzaki on Voice of Greece, explored Athens’ historic movie theaters and the future of going to the movies.
Filmmaker Lisa Themeli, creator of the documentary “Προσεχώς.”, and Nikos Theodosiou, a director, writer and cinema historian, spoke about movie theaters as places where people gather and make shared memories. They also considered what a city loses when those theaters close.
Joining from Thessaloniki, Kostas Bakirtzis, who oversees special programming at the Vakoura, Makedonikon, Apollon and Natali cinemas, described the daily challenge of keeping historic theaters open and financially viable.
Ahead of the public discussion “Athens’ Cinemas and Their Future” on Tuesday, September 22, at the Stella Municipal Cinema in Kypseli, the episode asked a question about the city’s future: Are we saving old cinemas for the memories they hold, or because we still need them?
