On Nisyros, steam rises from the earth, houses seem to grow out of volcanic rock, and the sound of the violin still fills the squares after sunset.
In the Monday, 28 September episode of “Moving Worlds,” Katerina Batzaki took Voice of Greece listeners to an island best understood through the ways people live there and the sounds that surround them.
Architect Anna Chartofylli, who lives and works on Nisyros, spoke about the island’s distinctive architecture and the wisdom built into its traditional homes. She discussed restoration and sustainable design, as well as the delicate balance between allowing a place to develop and preserving its character.
Violinist Glafkos Smargiannakis, who began playing at traditional celebrations on Nisyros, spoke about the island’s musical “accent” and its connections to the Dodecanese and Asia Minor. He also explored the relationship between musician and dancer, and how a tradition can evolve while retaining its identity.
A journey to Nisyros through two languages: stone and sound. Architecture creates spaces where people meet, and music gives them a reason to stay together.
