Giorgos Markopoulos was born in Messini in 1951 and has been living in Athens since 1965.
He studied economics. He has published seven collections of poetry, one of prose, two volumes of his essays on the work of other poets, two monographs (on football in Greek poetry and on the work of Tasos Livaditis), and has edited books on poetry.
In 1996 he was awarded the “Cavafy Prize” in Alexandria, Egypt, and in 1999 the Greek State Poetry Award for his collection of poems “Mi Skepazeis to Potami” (Kedros, 1998), while a selection of all his poetry collections was published in French, translated by Michel Volkovitch, under the title Ne recouvre pas la rivière (Desmos / “Cahiers grecs” – Paris 2000).
In 2011 he was awarded the Greek State Poetry Award for his poetry collection Kryfos Kynigos and the Athens Academy Prize of the Kostas and Eleni Ourani Foundation for his entire body of work.
