Poet of the Week 07/15/2019

Giannis Doukas was born in Athens in 1981. He studied Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Digital Humanities at King’s College in London. For the past four years he has been living in Galway, Ireland and working on his Ph.D. thesis on intertextuality in Late Antiquity epic poetry and methods for its digital representation.
He has written the following books: O kosmos opos Irtha kai Ton Vrika (short stories, Kedros, 2001), Sta Mesa Synora (poems, Polis, 2011, “Diavazo” Journal Debut Poetry Collection Award) and To Syndromo Stantal (poems, Polis, 2013, G. Athanas Prize of the Academy of Athens).
His poems have been translated into English, French, German, Serbian, Dutch and Polish. Two poems from his book Sta Mesa Synora (“Dyo Dromoi” and “Stin Epochi tou Kati San”) were set to music by Nikos Platyrachos in his album “Ta Astega” (2015). Two songs he wrote the lyrics for (“Stin Idia Poli ypo Vrochin” and “Biliardo”) have been included in “Stin Omichli ton Kairon”, an album by Thanos Mikroutsikos (2017).
He translates works from English into Greek. He has co-signed, with Charis Vlavianos, the translation of the love poems of E.E. Cummings entitled “Loipon as Filithoume” (Patakis, 2014). His writings have been published in digital and printed media, mainly in the magazines “Diavazo” and “Poiitiki”; he is a member of the latter’s editorial team.
