Nasos Vagenas is one of the most important representatives of poetry of the Generation of the 1970s, an essayist, critic, translator and academic.
He was born in Drama, Greece in 1945. He studied literature at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens (1963-1968), at the Universities of Rome (1970-1972), Essex (1972-1973), and Cambridge (1974-1978), where he wrote his doctoral thesis on the poetry of George Seferis. From 1980 to 1991, he was a professor of Modern Greek Literature at the University of Crete, and, since 1992, he has been a professor of Theory and Criticism of Literature at the University of Athens. In 1996, he taught at the University of Cyprus as a visiting professor. He has published 13 collections of poetry, one book of prose, and 11 books of critical essays and studies on literary subjects. He was awarded the Greek State Critique Award in 1995 for the work “I eironiki glossa: Kritikes meletes gia tin neoelliniki grammateia” and the Greek State Prize for Poetry in 2005 for his work “Stefanos”. |
