| Stratis Paschalis was born in Athens. He studied Political Science and Public Law at the Athens School of Law. He has published ten collections of poetry (the most recent ones being Epochi Paradeisou, 2008, and Ta eikonismata, 2013), a volume of essays (Poiisi se mikropsichous kairous, 2017), a novel (O anthropos tou leoforeiou), poetry and prose anthologies (M. Karagatsis, Istories amartias kai agiosynis, A. Papadiamantis, Skoteina Paramythia, Otan oi angeloi perpatoun, an anthology of prose poems etc.), a children’s fairy tale in verse (T’ asimenio rompotaki me to kokkino fotaki) and many translations (Rimbaud, Illuminations, The Drunken Boat, Lautreamont, The Songs of Maldoror, Bernard Noël, Le passant de l’Athos, etc.). In 2019, all of the poems he had written until then were published in a second edition, under the title “Stixoi enos Allou”. In the 2000-2010 decade he was a regular partner of the Greek National Theatre. He has translated more than thirty stage plays. These include: Euripides, Medea, Hippolytus, Orestes (for Epidaurus), Shakespeare, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Racine, Phaedra, Andromache, Bérénice, Edmond Rostand, The Romancers, Cyrano de Bergerac, Paul Claudel, Break of Noon, The Satin Slipper, Kushner-Corneille, The Illusion, Peter Shaffer, The Gift of the Gorgon, Eugène Labiche, The Happiest of the Three, Terrence Mcnally, Master Class, etc. He has written scripts for children’s plays (Oi treis Vasilopoules pou lionan ta govakia tous, Theseus and Ariadne on the Island of the Bulls, Trojan War) and has adapted literary works for the stage (The Murderess by A. Papadiamantis, Trellantonis by Penelope Delta, The Hunchback of Notre Dame by V. Hugo, The Great Chimera, Yugerman by M. Karagatsis, The Innocent by Broch). Lastly, he has translated many librettos and song texts for Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall. He has been honored for his poetry and translations with the Ourani Award of the Academy of Athens, the Greek State Translation Award, twice with the Poetry Award of the magazine Diavazo, the “Marios Ploritis” Theatrical Translation Award, as well as the “Aris Alexandrou” award for translated poetry. His poems and books have been translated into many languages. In 2016, he was awarded the “Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the French government. |
